Get on the visitor list
Ask whether an application, background review, relationship documentation, or separate approval for minors is required. Approval can take time.

A nationwide starting point for correctional visits, official state information, travel planning, communication, and the practical details families carry every day.
Visit-day checklist
Rules can differ by state, custody level, facility, visitor age, and visit type. Use this checklist, then confirm every detail with the facility.
Ask whether an application, background review, relationship documentation, or separate approval for minors is required. Approval can take time.
Check visiting days, reservation rules, arrival cutoff, duration, cancellation alerts, dress code, and whether the visit is contact, non-contact, or video.
Verify which government-issued photo IDs are accepted, whether minors need documents, and whether names must match the approved visitor record exactly.
Many facilities tightly limit bags, phones, keys, wallets, coins, paper, food, medication, and baby items. A clear bag is not automatically permitted.
Review color, fit, coverage, shoes, jewelry, undergarment, logo, and head-covering rules. Bring a backup outfit when traveling a long distance.
Know the parking location, check-in building, arrival window, search procedures, accessibility process, locker availability, and facility phone number.
Never assume an item is allowed. Clear bags, quarter holders, medications, baby supplies, and clothing that worked at one facility may be prohibited at another. The facility’s current written policy and staff instructions control.

Each button opens that state’s official corrections website. Use the agency’s facility locator, visitation, mail, phone, and money pages for current requirements.
Official-source standard: These state agency destinations were cross-checked against the current USAGov and National Institute of Corrections directories. Agencies can reorganize their websites, so use the agency search or contact page if a specific section has moved. County jails, federal prisons, immigration detention, and juvenile facilities use different systems.
Staying connected
Never rely on a random payment or locator website. Start with the agency or facility’s official instructions and confirm the provider name before entering personal or payment information.
State prisons, county jails, and federal prisons maintain different records. USAGov explains where to begin based on the type of custody.
Open the USAGov locator guide ↗Use the Bureau of Prisons locator for people in federal custody and the facility directory for official visitation and contact details.
Open the federal inmate locator ↗Use only the provider and exact account instructions named on the official agency or facility website. Verify the person’s legal name and identification number.
Open USAGov prison resources ↗Travel & lodging
Facilities may cancel or delay visits because of lockdowns, staffing, weather, transfers, or operational needs—even after a long drive.
Use the official locator, copy the full address, call the facility, and ask whether the visiting entrance or parking address differs from the mailing address.
When possible, compare refundable lodging, cancellation deadlines, check-in times, distance from the facility, and safe late-arrival options.
Keep the facility phone number, confirmation details, directions, visitor approval information, and an emergency contact available without relying on cell service.
Decide what your family will do if the visit is shortened or canceled. Avoid carrying prohibited items onto facility property while changing plans.
